Street Photography Ethics: Capturing Life Respectfully

Street photography walks a fine line between documentation and invasion. The best street photographers understand this tension and navigate it with intention. Before raising your camera, ask yourself: am I capturing a moment that tells a broader story, or am I exploiting someone’s vulnerability for a compelling image?

Different cultures and locations have varying expectations of privacy. In some cities, photographing strangers is part of the urban fabric; in others, it’s seen as intrusive. Learn local norms and always be ready to delete an image if someone objects. The human connection matters more than any single photograph. Some of the most powerful street images come from brief conversations with subjects who then allow themselves to be photographed authentically.
